Audmatic clothing was based in Los Angeles
and was founded in 2003 by artist/designer Audrey Roberts. After
studying art and physics at the University of Vermont, she moved
to L.A. in 2001 and began working as a sculpting instructor and
a designer for local jewelry company Planet Jill. However, having
worked for so long to help design other people’s artwork, she
began to feel the desire to create her own designs and began experimenting
with different mediums and processes. She created a line of rubber
stamp designs for Beverly Hills shop owner Suzi Finer and immediately
realized that those same designs would translate beautifully as
t-shirts as well. Soon after creating a small line of t-shirts
and designing her own website, her love for learning new processes
led her to teaming up with long time industry pattern makers Sokha
Seng and Justina Lee. Although she had never even used a sewing
machine before, they were able to instruct her in a crash course
for apparel design in order to travel to Las Vegas in a few short
months for the Pool Trade Show during fashion week. She has since
teamed up with the Nicky And Lucy showroom in downtown L.A. and
has had her clothing featured at many exclusive boutiques such
as Fred Segal, Intuition, and Lisa Kline. Her background in sculpture
allowed her to begin experimenting with merging both two dimensional
and three dimensional mediums in order to create quirky new designs
that are as beautiful as they are unique. She occasionally travels
to Japan and around the U.S. in search of non-traditional materials
in order to ensure that each t-shirt becomes a small individual
work of art all on its own. She currently lives in Los Angeles
and is working on a new body of sculptural work along with her
small army of very fierce kitty cats.
